How lucky is Beverley to have TWO trainers!

Welcome Ashlyn & Robbie!

Active Farmers would like to introduce and welcome Ashlyn & Robbie to the Active Farmers team. These two wonderful trainers will be working alternate classes to fit in with their schedules. How lucky are the community members of Beverley!

Ashlyn has been a Beverley local all her life, growing up on the family farm, and now working in the neighbouring town of Pingelly as an Agronomist.

She says living and working in a rural community is great fun, and she is lucky to work in a field that she is passionate about.

One of Ashlyn’s other passions is sport and keeping healthy.  Farming and sport are often at the centre of conversation and weekend catch ups in small towns. Along with the social interaction, sport and fitness is great for mental health.

As rural life can often be isolating, Ashly saw Active Farmers as an opportunity to combine her passions and bring people in the community together to help them become both happier and healthier.

Robbie is a 7th generation wheat and sheep farmer in Beverley, Western Australia. Growing up on a sheep farm meant keeping active came with the territory and with two sporty brothers, games of backyard cricket and footy were regular occurrences. Many years later they are all still chasing sheep around the sheep yards and football and cricket balls around the oval.

A bit about Robbie….Into my 20s I always had things like football and shearing as motivation and avenues to stay fit. In 2014 things would change as I had a health battle that prevented me from doing those things for the best part of 2 years. This was a turning point in my life, unable to train how I’d always done, I would need to learn different ways of moving my body. Little did I know my journey down this rabbit hole would develop into my true passion. Since that day I have spent the last 5 years working on living a more balanced life, improving my sleep, my nutrition, my strength, my mobility and my flexibility. I will continue to expand my knowledge in all things health and fitness for the rest of my life.

Along my journey a couple of things have come to my attention. Being in a small country town access to fitness information and facilities are rather scarce. With the internet and social media riddled with as much bogus information as good information it can leave people very confused as to how to go about it. This is why I decided to study my Cert III & IV in Fitness so I could help country people on their own fitness journeys.

The second is the way we country folk can tend to neglect our mental health. This is a big issue in rural Australia. I have first hand experience as a stubborn country bloke who would never ask for help and prided myself on being tough (I know many others like me). This didn’t serve me well in my difficult times and it was eventually learning to talk to my family and friends, about both my problems and theirs that I found extremely beneficial. This is a message I believe we need to continue to get behind in country towns.

When Ashlyn introduced me to Active Farmers I was extremely grateful to get the opportunity to be a part of the team. The values that Active Farmers lives by in improving physical and mental health in rural Australia are in line with my own. To be able to bring group fitness to rural communities is incredibly exciting. Having trained in team sports, and taken part in overseas fitness retreats, one of the greatest things I’ve loved about group fitness is the camaraderie. A sense of community is a basic human need and that is what active farmers provides. One of my favourite sayings is “you can’t pour from an empty cup”.

I’m looking forward to helping country people fill their mental and physical health cup, so they can be better positioned to give back to their loved ones and communities.
